PARAGUAY SENATE GETS SECOND CHANCE TO RATIFY CONVENTION
The Cámara de Diputados of Paraguay ratified the convention on enforced disappearances and send it back to the Senate where it had been rejected earlier. The Senate argued that the existing law was sufficient. The text in Spanish can be found in the proceedings of the session

NEW YORK: ARGENTINA PROMOTES CONVENTION

MEXICO: RATIFICATION IS RELATIVE

MEXICO INDICATES IT WILL DEPOSIT RATIFICATION SOON

SIDE EVENT OF ICAED AND GROUP DES AMIS DURING HRC SESSION

ARGENTINA RECALLS STATES TO RATIFY CONVENTION AT HRC
During the Human Rights Council in March the prime minister of Argentina calls on States to speed up the process of ratification of the Convention. He referred the special responsibility Argentina has coming from its history with disappearances. Read the news item (in Spanish)
THAILAND URGED TO SIGN
During a 2 day seminar on February 11-12, 2008 officials and human rights advocates urged Thailand to sign the convention on enforced disappearances. Officials from the Justice, Foreign and Defense ministries showed full support for the signing of the convention and promised to cooperate with civic groups and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on the campaign. LOWER HOUSE CHILE APPROVES CONVENTION
On January 3, 2008 the lower house of the parliament of Chile approves the convention. The Convention only lacks approval in the Senate. Read news article
