Worldwide August 30 activities
August 30 commemorations take place on all the continents. The following are excerpts from a wider range of actions taking place on or around August 30:
Uruguay - Amnesty International Uruguay is organizing a meeting a the psychology faculty together with families of the disappeared and PIT - CNT.
Chile - Amnesty International Chile will organize an information table in one of the main squares of Santiago either the 27 or 28 August and a joint event with the families of the Disappeared (Agrupacion de Familiares de Desaparecidos) in their demonstration on 30th August which will cross Santiago from Plaza Italia to the monument of the disappeared.
Thailand - Working Group on Justice for Peace (WGJP), in collaboration with the Department of Rights and Liberties Protection (RLPD) of the Ministry of Justice and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), are hosting a seminar on 29 August 2008. Guatemala - Liga Guatemalteca de Higiene Mental holds an exhibition about disappeared children during the war. See the exhibition invitation.
Philippines - Asian Federation Against Involunary Disappearances launches a new book about disappearances, Reclaiming Stolen Lives. See the programme and the invitation for the event.
Peru - Coordinadora Nacional de Derechos Humanos in Peru has sent a letter to the Peruvian president to urge him to ratify the Convention. See the letter (in Spanish).
France - Euro-Med Federation Against Enforced Disappearances (FEMED) together with Collectif des Familles de Disparus en Algérie (CFDA) is going to organize an all-day event in Paris with a demonstration against enforced disappearances, a photo exhibition, movies, speeches and other information. Argentina - Nobel Peace Prize winner Adolfo Perez Esquivel drafted a letter in support of the struggle of the families of the disappeared. He reiterates that the Convention is fundamental to eradicate the phenomenon. Read letter (in Spanish)
Iraq - In Iraq signatures for the ICAED appeal letter were collected. There will also be a public activity
Netherlands - In cooperation with Aim for human rights the Belarus Free Theatre will show the theatre play 'Discover Love', about the disappearance of Anatoly Krazovski in Belrarus in 1999, and the appeal letter will be presented to a politician.
Nigeria - A workshop will be organized by the Institute for Community Policing to promote the convention among human rights organizations.
Morocco - The Coordination committee of the families of the disappeared in Morocco (CCFDM) organizes a manifestation where families of the disappeared, NGOs, the Ministry of Justice, Media and others are informed about the Convention and the manifest is presented.
Argentina - Madres de Plaza de Mayo and FEDEFAM will organise a series of concerts to commemorate the disappeared. See the invitation letter (in Spanish).
Sri Lanka - Association of Family Members of the Disappeared (AFMD) is going to organise a host of activities on August 30; there will be a media conference, theatre, display of Mirror Wall monument, public demonstration, mass meeting and collection of signatures.
Indonesia - Indonesian Association of Families of the Disappeared (IKOHI) will hand out campaign material such as brochures and leaflets, hold a press conference about enforced disappearances, arrange a meeting with the Attorney General to demand him to resolve various cases of enforced disappearance as well as to hold a fasting break and a public discussion.
Spain - The Asociacion de la Recuperacion de la Memoria Historia (ARMHC) will send the appeal letter to the Spanish prime minister.
